MAKING THE MOST OF THE FAIR

The Careers Group has been helping potential postgraduate students develop and launch their further study careers for almost 20 years. So how can we help you?

The majority of research into postgraduate study is done online nowadays however this event is a great opportunity for you to meet face to face with representatives from further study institutions. It’s a one-stop shop for postgraduate study, with information on all aspects of further study, from choosing the right course for you to funding and how to apply.

Make the right choice
When approaching exhibitors, think of yourself as a ‘customer’, shopping around for the right qualification and course to suit your career and lifestyle. Consider the routes of employment that would be open to you upon completion of the degree – do these fit in with your future plans? Think about different modes of study, and whether you want to take a full-time course or fit part-time study in around a job or other training. In particular when planning your visit to the fair, think of questions that are not answered on the university website– this is a great opportunity for you to chat to staff and find out what you want to know, not just what the brochure tells you.

Plan your visit

  • Research the exhibitors you want to speak to in advance and prepare a list of questions, concentrating on information you might not find immediately on the website
  • Make sure you plan your day around the presentations and sessions you are interested in; check out the timetable on the website in advance of attending
  • Book a C2 Careers and Further Study advice appointment in advance to get the best time slot
  • Avoid the queues for the CV Surgery and get your CV or Application Form checked before coming to the fair, either through your university careers service (if you’re a current student), or through the C2 Careers e-guidance service

At the fair
If you're a bit shy about approaching exhibitors, don't worry - they are there to help you. Here are some tips:

  • As you approach, make eye contact so they are ready to talk to you
  • If they are busy, don't be afraid to stay a close distance so they know you are waiting
  • If you know what sort of course you are looking for, tell them and ask if they have anything similar
  • If you don't, tell them your academic (and professional) background and explain what you hope to get out of taking further study, then ask them what they have to offer
  • Don't forget to exchange contact details should you wish to ask more questions or submit an application
