'Public Health in the UK, History and Careers'

Professor Kessel gives an overview of public health in the UK, its history and how it is presently structured before covering key careers-related questions such as the where you could work, what you could do and how you can progress your career. This presentation will also be of value to those thinking about entering the public health specialist training programme (www.fph.org.uk/training).

Professor Kessel is currently Director of Public Health Strategy at the HPA with a remit to ensure the continued development of the Agency's strategy for supporting health protection planning and delivery in the UK and internationally. Professor Kessel is also an honorary professor of ethics at the LSHTM and was previously Director of Public Health for Camden Primary Care Trust.

Careers Talk: European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control

The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) was established in 2005. It is an EU agency aimed at strengthening Europe's defences against infectious diseases. The ECDC's mission is to identify, assess and communicate current and emerging threats to human health posed by infectious diseases. Core activities within the centre include: Surveillance, Scientific advice, Identification of emerging health threats (epidemic intelligence), Response, Training, Health Communications, Providing technical assistance (country support). Please note: The ECDC usually only employs European Union / EEA nationals.
