Recently C2 was invited to present at the European Universities Institutes (EUI) Teaching and Learning Conference in Florence. The EUI are looking to develop a centre of excellence for Teaching and Learning, specifically focused on PhD and postdoctoral education. C2 was invited to explore how the careers agenda could fit within this model. Katie Dallison, C2 careers consultant flew out to represent The Careers Group.

The conference was held in an amazing villa in the Tuscan hills, just out of Florence which forms part of the EUI campus. Along with a raft of experts from Oxford, the LSE, Exeter and other European Universities, Katie presented and discussed the ideas of using case-based learning with PhD students, introducing more flexible delivery options such as webinars, increasing researchers teaching practice and if leadership skills should be taught to this cohort. The round-table nature of the conference allowed for interesting discussions and the EUI was able to gain a range of perspectives on many important aspects of researcher development. Katie also had a chance to talk to recent graduates, gaining their perspectives on researcher career development. The conference concluded with a wonderful conference dinner held in a contemporary Italian restaurant.

The information gained over the course of the conference will be feed into the EUI’s strategic plans to develop the teaching and learning unit. C2 and the EUI are currently exploring ways in which they can work together in the future.

The Step London Internship Programme from The Careers Group, University of London in partnership with Step Enterprise Ltd. has proved to be a tremendous success with students, graduates and employers. Open to all industries and occupations, client employers are supported by our expert team who will advertise, accept applications, filter and screen, interview and produce a shortlist for interviews and selection in order to keep recruitment effort and bureaucracy for employers to a minimum.

The Careers Group has now introduced a college specific Step Internship Programme. Through this new model, a vacant internship position is only advertised to students and graduates of a specific institution. So far, college specific Step Internship schemes have been successfully introduced at King’s College London and Royal Holloway, University of London.

Although limiting the range of potential candidates, the advantage to participating employers is that no recruitment fee is charged. If recruitment at a specific college isn’t successful, the vacant position is opened and advertised to everyone, with recruitment fees applying to employers.

C2 Consultancy at The Careers Group has been invited to speak at the inaugural teaching and learning workshop for the European University Institute (EUI) based in Florence, Italy.

This workshop is the first step towards the EUI’s plan to establish a Centre of Excellence for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education and Academic Career Development. The EUI teaching and learning ‘model’ aims to integrate career development with teaching and learning skills and will initially target EUI doctoral and postdoctoral researchers. They wish to implement best practice at the institutional level and spread this knowledge into graduate education training all over Europe, by taking advantage of the rich and diverse backgrounds of their academic community and their reputation as a melting pot for the multiple academic traditions of Europe.

Katie Dallison, careers consultant, will be attending the workshop and leading a session and discussion on careers and the job market. She will drawing on her experiences of using case based learning (CBL) with researchers to introduce a unique way of integrating career learning into the curriculum. CBL is a tool frequently used in academic teaching, especially within medicine and engineering; it allows people to explore different (and equally correct) solutions to a case within a group environment. CBL is about researchers discussing issues, deciding priorities, and combining different experiences to explore what are often new situations. Participants take on an advisory role for a fictitious person which allows a range of career tools to be introduced, even if the participants themselves are not at that stage of their career path.

In the past C2 has worked with the EUI to support their researchers in the development of interview skills. C2 also does a range of other workshops throughout Europe, providing careers support to the European Microbiological Laboratories in France, Germany, and Italy along with one to one career coaching sessions to the University of London Institute in Paris.

The Careers Group has recently completed collections of destinations data for 32 institutions which covered over 145,000 graduates.

The Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education (DLHE) survey is an annual data collection aimed at finding out what graduates are doing six months after graduation covering information on employer, job title, salary and more. Many institutions now choose to outsource this collection to The Careers Group as we have been experts in DLHE collection for many years.

The University of Greenwich is one of the clients we collect DLHE information for. Ed Paxton, their Destinations Manager, states “If your institution is looking to outsource the full DLHE operation then you can feel confident that The Careers Group will deliver a professional service to meet your requirements.”

As well as collection, The Careers Group supports institutions in reporting their DLHE information as required in the Key Information Sets (KIS). For London institutions this also provides information for the online resource What London Graduates Do which collects DLHE information from several universities to provide careers options with different subjects and what areas of study are most likely to lead to a desired career. This is invaluable careers information for undergraduates and those choosing where and what to study at university.

Any Higher Education Institution seeking to use The Careers Group for their DLHE collection, reporting or anything else should consult our Shared Services for Institutions website where you can read case studies and feedback from other clients as well as finding out what we can offer your institution.

The transition to the new fees regime is causing many Higher Education Institutions to turn their attention to the potential of shared services to improve efficiency and quality. The University of London delivers many established shared services. One, The Careers Group provides a remarkably successful paradigm. Their new website (www.careers.lon.ac.uk), brings together the full range of their services for the first time.

Anne-Marie Martin, Director of Shared Services (Students and Graduates), University of London, says:

“For over one hundred years our shared service model has brought efficiencies and quality improvements to the Higher Education Institutions we serve. We deliver a breadth and depth of service which is just not possible in a smaller unitary service. For too long we have relied on word of mouth to spread the news of what we can offer. Our new website invites everyone to be part of our success.”

Higher education decision makers can consider a whole range of services, combine any number, or opt for a complete solution for employability and student support.

Attract and retain students

Enhance business engagement

Develop the skilled graduate

Improve league table performance

Data collection and reporting

Develop your staff

Solve your staff problems

Bespoke services.

Case studies describing successful collaborations and testimonials from current clients bring the menu and high quality of services to life and demonstrate best practice. Contact points are provided which will help people interested in the services find an ideal solution that both fulfils their needs and fits within the constraints of their budget.
