The Careers Group, University of London celebrates the success of the London Step Internship having recently placed a stunning number of 150 students and graduates into exciting internships. The programme is responsible for paid placements of up to 12 weeks with established employers throughout London.

During this programme, students and graduates get insights into their areas of interest and companies from various industries from engineering to publishing and communications, challenge their academic knowledge in a real environment and earn some money on top. Moreover, Step Interns gain invaluable work experience to top up their CVs alongside their time-intensive studies, which helps them face the ever increasing challenges and competition in the current graduate job market.

Recognising these conditions and the value internships bring to students and graduates, The Careers Group wants to push the internship market to students and graduates further and has just committed to an expansion of the partnership with Step Ltd. in the future. It is aimed to enhance the current success and provide even more brilliant, high-quality internship placements to students and graduates.

The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, said:

In such a competitive job market internships are a vital channel for many graduates to move from study into work. The expansion of this programme, to provide even more opportunities, is extremely welcome. I am sure the skills and fresh thinking these graduates can bring to the work place will add value to the competitiveness and productivity of their employers and a boost to London’s economy in 2013.

Students and graduates who are interested can take a look at vacant positions on JobOnline and apply! Employers wishing to participate in the London Step Internship Programme can find further information here.

This week The Careers Group released some excellent new features to JobOnline its vacancies’ database packed with graduate jobs across more than 20 sectors. Updated daily, there are opportunities available across most skills, interests and degrees.

The improved homepage design means that students and graduates can easily access current jobs by industry type. Each industry is listed as a  text-link which takes the visitor directly to jobs within that sector. The number of opportunities available for an industry-type is conveniently listed right next to the link. At the time of writing there are, for example, 342 roles within IT and Management, 277 opportunities within Finance and 127 within NGOs and Charities.

There is an advanced search facility which allows a student or graduate to personalise their search. For example, the combination of “education”, “graduate programme/scheme“ and “full-time” returned eight roles including trainee teachers at three different schools.

JobOnline

Current internships, temporary jobs and international jobs are now featured on the homepage.

Despite the current job market JobOnline – the online jobs board from The Careers Group, University of London – has seen a tremendous increase in vacancies on its database.

Over the last month 1113 vacancies have been posted on JobOnline which is a 53% increase on the same month last year.  The most notable increases have been in Science, Engineering, Arts and Marketing.

Ingrid Ross, Head of Communications and Vacancies, suggests this success may be down to the introduction of sector-related pushes where each month the team focuses on sourcing vacancies for a particular industry. For June the focus is on Life Sciences which has so far resulted in an increase of eight times the vacancies for Animal & Plant Resources, Materials Science – Manufacturing & Processing, and Scientific Services over the same period last year. Next month the team will be focusing on engineering.

JobOnline is a terrific resource for student and graduate job-seekers with daily updated vacancies for full-time, part-time, graduate programmes and internship opportunities. All of the jobs advertised adhere to strict guidelines ensuring they conform to National Minimum Wage legislation and provide equality of opportunity.
