Does your career need a health check?

Posted by Alison Springate

Feeling unwell

Do you ever find that over the winter months you pick up a cold that won’t go away? Maybe it goes through phases where you think you’re getting better, but then you’ll go to bed late, or walk in the cold a bit too long, and suddenly it’s back with vengeance. You know you should go to the doctor but you’re too busy, and other commitments get in the way, and so you struggle on regardless.

It can be the same with your career. Sometimes you can be so busy with the commitments within your job that you decide to ignore that nagging feeling that maybe something isn’t quite right. Maybe you’re bored, over-worked or under-challenged. You know you’re not happy, but sometimes it feels like too much effort to actually admit that something is wrong and to commit yourself to doing something about it.

Let things slide

You may avoid seeking help about your career. Perhaps you don’t even know where to start. Your friends and family may offer to help, but maybe they don’t understand you. Or they offer impractical advice. At this point some people find it useful to book a career health check.

Seeking Help

At C2 we offer a career health check service. This is a half hour session designed to help you to begin to explore your situation and how career coaching might be able to help.

A careers consultant won’t provide a magic solution to your work problems. However there maybe a number of benefits:

  • Making the first step to seek help can help you feel more in control of your situation
  • It can provide the momentum you need to make progress
  • They can ask questions about your career that may help you to look at your career from a different perspective

Taking the first step

Of course you don’t have to see a careers adviser. Like with being poorly sometimes things do eventually just get better on their own. However meeting with a professional career coach can often be a great way of inspiring yourself into action. In the long run this can save a lot of time and effort.
